How does the state of New York rate it's public schools?

New York Public schools are rated by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) based on a number of factors, including student performance on standardized tests and graduation rates.

The state tests students in reading and math every year. Students also take an end-of-year exam called the Regents Exams. These exams cover topics including English language arts, mathematics, science, history/social studies, and art.

In addition to these scores, the NYSED uses other measures to determine how well schools perform. For example, they look at whether or not teachers have master’s degrees, as well as the percentage of low-income students who graduate from high school. They also examine the dropout rate among black and Hispanic students.

Schools that receive ratings of “Academically Acceptable” meet all academic standards for their grade levels.

Schools that receive a rating of “Developing” may be making progress toward achieving higher standards.

Schools that receive an “Unacceptable” rating do not meet minimum academic standards.
